Review Note:
Launching the base game (Steam app 17390) fails with "Could not find the Data directory, we cannot run. [1004]".
Workaround to fix:
(1) launch Steam app 17440 (Creepy & Cute Parts Pack) instead — it ships a different SporeApp.exe build (20,444,672 bytes vs 20,626,168) that starts correctly and loads the same shared game data, so you still get the full base game;
(2) disable the Steam overlay with a DLL override (Wine Configuration → Libraries → `gameoverlayrenderer` → Disabled). Both are required; neither works on its own.
